Special times in life call for special gifts, trinkets and mementos. Ceramic plates can be thoughtful, ornate gifts and perfect for special occasions like a First Holy Communion, Christmas, Easter or other religious holiday, Mother's Day, anniversary, birthday or Valentine's Day. What makes ceramic plates even more special is the fact that you can have them personalized with the recipient's name or a sentimental message from you to your loved one.

The first step in personalizing a ceramic plate is to find and purchase the plate of your choice. A wide selection of ceramic plates provides ample opportunity for each customer to find the perfect style, size, shape and design. You might also consider "blank wares," which allow the personalizing service to implement their own creative designs and ornamentation, as well as your desired name or message.

"We strongly prefer to use our own blank wares. Most decorating companies do not actually make the wares," says Cheryl Lyons, president of LDA Creations, Inc, a company that specializes in decorative and personalized gifts. "We buy what are called blank wares and add our own decoration to it. We strongly prefer to use one of our standard pieces, because many types of glazes may not be compatible with the decorating system that we use."

Ms. Lyons explains that certain types of ceramic plates may be better suited for personalization than others. This is why it is important for a consumer to consider whether he or she intends for personalization upon purchase. "If you brought us a plate made in Poland or something like that, its glazing may not be compatible with our decoration," she clarifies. "If you insisted that we use one of your plates, we would have to test it in the kiln prior to decorating to make sure that there are no difficulties."

For the past 10 years, Cheryl Lyons has worked with a variety of ceramic plates as well as textile pieces like aprons and tote bags. LDA Creations has recently added wood items to its product line. "We do ceramic tiles in particular that would be set into wood to make items such as lamp bases, mirrors, and wall mirrors," she explains. "The decorative element is on the ceramic item that is incorporated into the wood design."

Ceramic plates make great keepsakes, but they can also work well for an organization's fundraising efforts, or as a special group gift for a large number of people. The amount of time required to customize a ceramic plate may vary according to several factors. "Normally, the way we process orders, if someone were making 50 or 100 plates or some sort of community related thing, we would usually work on it for 10 to 14 days," Ms. Lyons says. "It depends on the quantity involved. If you are talking about just one plate, it's going to depend on the art type - whether it's to be hand painted and who is doing the painting."

She adds that the total cost for a personalized display plate will also vary based on the type of decoration involved, the number of plates to be decorated and the amount of intricacy involved in the ornamentation. A wide array of display plates are available across the globe, ranging in price from $5 to $10, all the way up to $100 and $200.
