They can absolutely. We start students as young as four. Kidnapping is always scary to people. The reality with the young children 4, 6 or 8 years old is they are an easier target. By screaming, kicking, punching and yelling, they increase the chance of attracting help. Realistically no six-year-old can fight off an attacker. A lot of kidnappings that took place a couple of years ago in broad daylight and semipublic areas. Children tend to freeze up. If the kids just screamed, there is a decent chance someone would have looked and the guy would have taken off. So, with the youngest kids that's what you can do from that standpoint.

Learning to defend themselves is much more interesting to children. Obviously, you have to make sure that you are not teaching the kid martial arts to go bully someone else. An important part of our classes is making sure that they are not doing that. But if someone does threaten them at school, they know how to stand up and defend themselves in an appropriate way and at the appropriate time.
