I don't know of any places that are totally free. We do appraisals for our students every Tuesday; they are fairly cheap. There is also another place on the Internet that I think does them as well. That's probably your best bet. There are a couple of tricks. There are people, for example, if you take your antique to an antique dealer and you tell them that you are possibly interested in selling it, they will give you a whole sale price. That wholesale price is very often half of what the retail price is. So whatever it is they offer you, you can say well I will think about it and walk away. Then, you will find out the retail value of it by doubling that price.

That's the tricky way of getting one, but you know that doesn't guarantee anything. The antique dealer has to be savvy enough to recognize what the piece is as well.

In the end, when it comes to that, it really is, "You get what you pay for."

In the end, you can always go to a professional. If you go to an appraiser from either Ashford or the International Society for appraisers, they can charge you anywhere from $50 to $150 an hour.
