It's all about making choices. I don't know how it is around the rest of the world, but in California we are really lucky. Most of the restaurants here will steam the vegetables instead of sautéing them, if you ask. It's easier to put the sauce on the side and that way I can just dip my food into the sauce. This way you are eating just a tiny bit for flavor instead of 50 grams of fat in dressing or sauce; same thing with salads, dressing on the side. Try to get the fish grilled and not fried or sautéed. They are really good about that. Until I find that even when I travel, it can't hurt to ask. You can always ask them to not bring the chips to the table. Also, ask for no cheese or mayo on my turkey sandwich; mustard only because I eat whole wheat bread. The worst thing that they're going to say is no. A lot of times you can pull it off or scrape it off. But, little choices like that can make a huge difference over time.
A huge difference over time can be sharing. So you want something rich such as a dessert, share it with a few people at the table. The more rich food or the fattier or sugary food you are eating a smaller amount and again, you are feeling satisfied.
