Hypnosis has been around for several hundred years. During the time of development and into the present day, many scientists are still baffled at exactly how hypnosis works. But, regardless of how hypnosis seems to cure and treat a varying range of ailments, the point remains it works. And as long as something is working, most seem to let minor details of how slip by.

A way of using a person's subconscious mind as a tool, hypnosis has long been valued and appreciated for the multitude of problems it can be attributed to having cured. Larry Volz is a former magician who took up hypnosis 15 years ago. He is the executive director for the American Hypnosis Clinic and has held this position for almost four years now. As someone who has seen hypnosis used as tool to help cure many things, Volz said that the two top uses for hypnosis include helping someone to stop smoking or loose weight.

"Smoking is probably the No. 1 reason that people come to a hypnotist with weight loss being second," he said. "In 1958 the journal of the American Medical Association endorsed hypnosis. And since then the journal has shown one research project after the next saying that yes, it does work for a lot of different things: stress, smoking, weight loss, alcohol and drugs, phobias, fears, compulsion, gambling, and other addictions."

While helping someone to stop smoking, eating or using a chemical substance are huge reasons why many visit the hypnotist, some other reasons revolve around self-improvement. Hypnosis can also be used to help some reduce stage fright or improve learning. Hypnosis can be used to remove certain apprehensions allowing for someone to be more involved in the class.

Hypnosis can also be used to cure other habits such as nail biting and procrastination. Hypnosis has been known to be used to help reduce pain and aches in the body as well as being used as a supplement for anesthesia during surgery or childbirth. Hypnosis can help a sports athlete maximize their potential on the golf course, basketball court or hockey rink while also giving that sales person the confidence they need to be a better salesman. But of all the ailments that hypnosis can help cure, one of the more popular ones would have to be stress. Stress can be very dangerous possible leading to other problems in the body.

"Hypnotherapy can help cure anything that's psychological in nature and also a lot of physical problems," Volz said. "There is a huge amount of research coming out that says hypnotherapy works better than most medical interventions. "

"One thing that we are making a real difference in is irritable bowel syndrome," Volz added. "Irritable bowel is very, very stress related and there is nothing in the world better for stress than hypnosis. When you worry, the subconscious mind focuses too much on stress and scary ideas which is echoed in the body by an adrenalin response. When that happens, chronically over years, it can cause real problems in the body and the autonomic nervous system goes out of whack. The nervous system becomes misaligned causing irritable bowel syndrome. Six to twelvw-12 sessions of hypnosis will often times cure irritable bowel syndrome completely without any drugs at all - it's one of the things that's really taking off."

"A lot of doctors still don't know about it, but the ones we have worked with are astounded," Volz continued. "Doctors are very frustrated about irritable bowel syndrome because the drugs don't work very well. People are desperate for help because irritable bowel is such a horrible thing."
