Can Mesothelioma Be Treated?

By Jackie Johnson

  • Overview

Mesothelioma is a unique cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. It is difficult, if not impossible, to treat with conventional cancer therapies. The cancer research community is working hard to develop an effective treatment. To date, most of the treatment protocols are not effective for this serious and aggressive form of cancer. You and your doctor will need to discuss treatment for this disease, and settle on an approach that will slow the progression of this unfortunate form of cancer.
    • Step 1

Ask your doctor to prescribe a treatment program to treat your mesothelioma. Chances are that the first approach will be to remove the affected tissue through surgery. The mesothelium is a protective sac that protects the body's internal organs. This kind of cancer attacks this sac, and your doctor may refer you to a cancer specialist who can remove the cancerous area of the tissue affected.
    • Step 2

See if chemotherapy will be effective for your cancer, once the cancerous tissue has been removed. Your oncologist will be able to advise you about this.

    • Step 3

Take the radiation therapy if your doctor prescribes it. It may help to extend your life.
    • Step 4

Ask your doctor if you can participate in treatment trials that are being conducted by the pharmaceuticals to help people who will develop this serious cancer in the future. Even though asbestos regulations are now in place, people may accidentally and unknowingly suffer exposure to asbestos that can cause this disease in the future.
    • Skill: Challenging
    • Tip: Joining a cancer support group can help you deal with your emotions during this period. There are cancer support groups in most communities, and there are many online where you can get comfort and support from others.
    • Warning:
    • Avoid old buildings that are being demolished unless you wear the proper breathing gear and protective suits.
