I always recommend going to an actual quilting shopping. A lot of the bigger craft stores like Michael's or Hobby Lobby have quilting sections, but a lot of times they are not necessarily run by people who know a lot about quilting and they may not have the variety of supplies that a quilt shop will have. There are a lot of internet directories for quilt shops nationwide, under sewing or crafting. There are hundreds of quilt shops all over the country and of course you can order supplies over the internet. Once you start quilting and know what you are looking for, a lot of times it's just as easy to order from a big supplier store then it is to drive to a shop. On the other hand, a lot of people like to go the shop because they are meeting people and talking with people who share the same passion for quilting.

It can be inexpensive or expensive as you want to make it. Obviously different fabrics cost different prices. There is cheaper fabric, there is more expensive fabric, but if you get a good basic quilting starter kit you probably need $200 at least to buy your basic supplies, but it doesn't have to be expensive.
