While pop culture tends to go for the dramatic when exploring the spiritual realm, in horror movies or stories almost every first contact from beyond occurs through a child or young adult.

"In my studies and my experience, children are more prone to being influenced by spirits," says Jeffrey Seelman, a world-renowned psychic and exorcist, who started up Starclear (www.starclear.com) in 1999. "This is because of children's natural raw emotional energy. Negative spirits use children as a catalyst for a number of reasons. Some may feed off of the children's emotional energy. Spirits nourish themselves, and they build themselves up on emotional energy like love. Some spirits feed themselves and nourish themselves with anger, hatred, jealousy, self-hatred, and all of these different things."
While children may be vulnerable to good or bad spiritual influence, it's actually less common for a negative spirit to prey upon a person, child or adults, he says.
"I can tell you that an attack of a negative spirit is far more common upon a home than it would be on a person," he says. "Usually, the spirit likes to attack the environment and try to influence families, relationships, and individuals who live in that environment."
But spirits will attack people, he says. "When the negative spirit attacks a person, it is usually to influence the behavior. So, if a person is angry, a spirit would basically be next to you, approach you, and provoke you through emotional exchange."
The spirit adds its own negative energy to a person's energy when trying to influence an individual, he says. "If you feel that you are not happy with your sister or something like that, the spirit might try to stir up your anger. It would try to feed your anger so that you get really angry."
Under the spirit's influence, people get confused and begin to believe the spirit's anger is their own, he says.
"There are lots of evil spirits out there and they are at work," he says.
One form of attack pop culture likes to focus on is possession, he says. Possession rarely happens, and it's not quite as dramatic as movies make it out to be.
Possession happens when a spirit attaches itself to an individual, he says. It occurs over a long period of time. Although he says there could be dramatic moments, under the right conditions, when events such as telekinesis or levitation occur.
"Somehow, a spirit actually infests a persons aura, which is the energy field or protection field that surrounds each and every one of us," he says. "In some instances, the spirit actually has been able to permeate into the inner energy field of a person and influence the personality. These attacks have been destructive enough to disrupt the person's aura and energy field. They can influence them emotionally and psychologically. These attacks are pretty much constant. You could consider this to be possession."
