Can You Split Cable for Direct TV?

By Quinten Metatron Plummer

  • Overview

While it's not feasible to splice a coax cable to share your Direct TV signal with another television, a satellite splitter is a reliable option. The splitter uses the coax cable's screw-on head to connect multiple cables and pass along the signal. Give yourself some flexibility with what room your watch television in.
    • Step 1

Disconnect the coax cable running from your Direct TV receiver to your television. The cable should be plugged into the "Coax Out" port on the back of your receiver on one end and plugged into the back of your TV on the other end. Leave the end attached to the receiver plugged in.
    • Step 2

Connect the free end of the cable to the splitter. The cable's head will screw on to the splitter--unless your cable is the "push on" type. The splitter's coax port distributions will be uneven. There should be a single port on one side of the splitter and multiple ports on the other side. Attach the cable to the side of the splitter with the single port. The other side of the splitter will send the split signal to the televisions.
    • Step 3

Connect the two pieces of coax cable to the other end of the splitter--the end with multiple ports. Run one of the cables back to the coax port on the primary TV. Connect the other to the coax port on the secondary TV. Because the splitter is simply dividing the original signal sent from the receiver, both the primary and secondary televisions will receive the same signal and broadcast the same channels.
    • Step 4

Use the optional remote extender to change channels on the receiver from a different room. The remote extender converts the receiver's infrared remote control sensor into radio frequency signals that are received by a sensor in the next room. Your remote control uses the sensor as a relay and allow you to change channels on the receiver without being in the same room.
