Lewes is on the Delaware Bay where the bay meets the Atlantic Ocean in the southeast portion of Delaware. Because of our proximity to the ocean our summers and winters tend to be more moderate than other cities that we're close to, but we experience all four seasons.
We are two hours from Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington and approximately three and a half hours from New York City. So, we draw visitors from several large metropolitan areas. Our population is 3,000 and in the summer time it can easily double with visitors.
We have a tourism based economy. Lewes was the first city and Delaware the first state to be established. We were settled in 1631 by the Dutch. We've had a long history of being a fishing village. We have a number of commercial fishermen who also take visitors out for pleasure fishing
We have a lot of English history as well as the original Dutch colony, so there are a variety of architectural styles here including Colonial and Victorian.
