The symbols are something you learn in your second degree Reiki class. A Reiki Master prefers to teach these to a student himself. You aren't supposed to tell other people, it is something they are supposed to learn during their classes. You do not want people to falsely believe they know Reiki when they have not taken the proper classes.
What are the symbols used for?
That is something the Reiki practitioner teaches his student. It is hard to explain without giving away.
So they represent ideas?
They represent ideas, not just words. You don't need to know what they are in order to practice Reiki because if you are a first degree Reiki practitioner, then you haven't been introduced to the symbols. It's important to second degree Reiki and some of the things you learn in second degree Reiki like distance healing. It is something left up to the Reiki master to teach. It is something someone who is learning first degree Reiki should not concern themselves with.

I am a first degree Reiki practitioner so I have not taken the class. It is something that I should know very much about but because my Reiki master is my mom, I guess I know more about that.
