How to Cancel a Paypal Account

By H.C. Hisel

  • Overview

PayPal is an online payment system that allows you to make payments and receive payments without revealing your banking information to the public. EBay recommends PayPal as a payment method on its website. PayPal accounts are linked to a checking account. Money is withdrawn and deposited into a checking account through PayPal. PayPal is intended to be a secure payment system. But if your account information has been compromised, it is a good idea to close the account to keep your funds and linked checking account secure.
    • Step 1

      Log into your PayPal account.
    • Step 2

Withdraw any money that you have in your PayPal account. Click on the "Withdraw" link and choose "Transfer to Bank Account" to have the funds electronically transferred to your bank account, or choose "Request a Check" to have PayPal send a check to your mailing address. Note: PayPal charges a $1.50 fee for check withdrawals.

    • Step 3

Cancel your PayPal account. Click on the "Profile" link. Under Account Information, click the "Close Account" link.
    • Step 4

Fill out the form to close your PayPal account. The form asks for the reason you wish to close your account. Click the "Confirm" button to complete the account cancellation process. PayPal will send you an email notifying you that your account has been closed.
    • Step 5

Notify anyone who needs to know about your account closure. If you receive payments to your PayPal account or you have automatic payments deducted from your PayPal account, notify the interested parties to make different account arrangements.
