How to Cancel a Target Credit Card

By Contributing Writer

  • Overview

Perhaps your love of shopping at Target is hitting you where it hurts. If that is true, it might be time to give that pain in your pocketbook a little relief. Target credit cards are a great thing for emergency purchases, but most of us use them for much more than that. Whether it's out of control spending habits or a spike in interest rates, canceling the cards altogether might be the answer.
Bills and Debt Can Come to an End
  • Let's Get Started

  • Step 1

Pay off the balance. It's a good protective measure. Read over their policies before calling and canceling your card.
  • Step 2

Go online to Target's official Website, or call the customer service number that's on your billing statement.
  • Step 3

Click on "Help" at the top of the page of Target's official Website. If you're not using the Internet and have called the number on your billing statement, select one of the options that lets you speak to someone about your bill.
  • Step 4

Find 'Contact Us' from Target's Website, where you'll find the phone number to speak to a customer service representative.

  • Step 5

Tell the customer service representative that you want to cancel your card. Remain firm in your conviction that you want to cancel your card.
  • Confirming the Cancellation

    • Step 1

Ask for a confirmation number from the customer service representative or to have some form of documentation sent to you, confirming that you've canceled the card.
    • Step 2

Write down the confirmation number and--if possible--the name of the customer service representative.
    • Step 3

Follow up with your own written documentation by sending a notice of cancellation to Target's financial office in Minneapolis. Be sure to date the letter and include details of your conversation with the customer service representative. The address to send it is: Target Corporation, 1000 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis, MN 55403.
    • Step 4

When you receive confirmation or a document acknowledging the cancellation, destroy the card.
    • Skill: Moderately Easy
