Cancer Of The Lymph Node Called Hodgkin's Lymphoma

Cancer of the lymph node called Hodgkin's lymphoma is a type of lymph node cancers. This article gives key information about detection and survival percentages.

Hodgkin's Lymphoma is one of several types of cancers of the lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are structures in the body that carry white blood cells and fight infections and disease. Lymphomas can occur anywhere in the body because there are lymph nodes all over the body. Most people think there are only lymph nodes in the neck, armpits and groin.

Hodgkin's lymphoma begins in the chest. There is a persistant cough and/or chest pain. The lymph nodes in the neck and/or armpits become swollen. Weight loss, night sweats, fever, weakness and fatigue are common symptoms. Most cases occur in people in their 20's to 40's, but can occur at any time. The key to treating the disease is early detection. Cure rates are greater than 90% for people with early detection and greater than 50% for later detection. Hodgkin's Lymphoma differs from Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in that the latter occurs almost exclusively in people over 40 and the cure rate is signifigantly less, although the symptoms are very similar.

Symptoms include:

-fatigue

-night sweats

-fever

-persistant cough

-weight loss

-swelling of lymph nodes in the chest, neck, armpits and groin

Lymph nodes do become swollen when we are sick with infections, colds etc, so don't panic if you feel enlarged lymph nodes, without any of the other symptoms. In infections, we often have a fever as well.

Biopsy of a suspected enlarged lymph node can identify the type of lymphoma. Blood tests and x-rays are other diagnostic tools. Chemotherapy is the treatment of choice for lymphoma. It destroys cancer cells, but unfortunately, chemo destroys the good with the bad cells, so it has many negative side effects as well. Radiation is also used often to fight this disease. Only when the case is severe and has spread throughout the body, is a bone marrow transplant used.
