I would say that the first six months of sod establishment is the most important. Establishment of the sod early-on is going to be the backbone of how it is going to do for its life cycle. Watering, fertilizing, and mowing will be most important. You want to make sure that you don't cut it too short. If you do cut it too short, it's going to dry out a lot faster. You do not want to over fertilize it. Basically, you try to encourage the sod to grow roots. Over fertilizing with nitrogen is going to cause a burst of green foliage growth, and that's not what you want the first six months. Water the sod regularly and once your sod has been down about three weeks, then you will treat your sod as if it is an established turf, because by that time you have pretty good roots. You can mow it after that point, but you don't want to cut it too short.
