How to Care for a Temperpedic Mattress

By Amy Kniss, eHow Money editor

  • Overview

Tempurpedic mattresses aren't cheap and owners want to make sure they get their money's worth. Caring for your tempurpedic mattress properly will ensure it lives through its 20 year warranty in pristine condition. While the mattress is built to require little care, there are a few steps you can take to keep it clean and in good condition for years to come.
    • Step 1

Keep your mattress flat. Storing it on its side or folding it challenges its structural integrity. The mattress is made to withstand an extreme amount of pressure, but that pressure must be distributed evenly. When the mattress is mishandled the improper distribution of weight can reduce the quality of support the mattress provides.
    • Step 2

Place your tempurpedic mattress on a firm foundation; you cannot place your mattress on an ordinary box spring. The foundation for the mattress must be solid; a platform foundation is the most common choice. You can buy the version that tempurpedic pairs with the bed, or you can find a cheaper off brand version elsewhere. As long as the bed rests on a solid flat surface, you will not violate the warranty.

    • Step 3

Keep it cool. Your mattress responds to the weather, so if you like your bed firm, keep the room dry and the temperature steeady at 65 degrees; the temperature that the manufacture says reflects the mattress's optimal state. In warm and/or humid weather the mattress feels softer. If you don't like this use a dehumidifier and turn a fan on in the room. The cooler you keep your room, the harder or firmer the mattress becomes.
    • Step 4

Avoid using heating pads or electric blankets with your tempurpedic mattress. Exposure to heat can damage the material in the mattress and make it less responsive over time. Use down blankets to keep warm when using a tempurpedic mattress. You may consider using tempurpedic's MattressProtector.
    • Skill: Moderately Easy
    • Tip: Do not place your new mattress on your old box spring.
    • Tip: Do not place the mattress on a water bed or futon frame.
    • Warning:
    • Do not rotate your mattress. Tempurpedic mattress are uniquely designed and have both a top and a bottom. Keep your mattress faced up as indicated by the tag and do not flip it for any reason.
