Starting a home-based sewing business is an easy and fun way to make money. The start-up costs are minimal if you already own a sewing machine and the basic supplies needed. Even if you don’t already own these items, it really doesn’t take much money to get started. Your options are to make particular product or to do alterations and/or special orders for different items. This article will focus on making a specific product to sell. However, much of the advice is applicable for any type of sewing business.

The first thing you need to decide on is what you are going to sell. If you are going to make a product, then you need to research your market. A good place to start your search is an online auction website. In this type of market, competition is fierce but you can get a good idea of what will and will not sell. You will also be able to see what the demand and pricing for a particular product is by a search through the existing auctions. Another good idea is to do an online search for websites that offer the same or similar products. These websites can give you an idea of what your competitor is offering and their pricing.

If you already own a sewing machine, decide what features you need and make sure that your current machine can handle the job. If you need to buy your first machine or upgrade, find reviews on different models and pick the best one that will fit into your budget. Some popular models to start with are Kenmore, Singer, and Brother. You can often get first hand information about a particular model by searching online and talking with family and friends. Another idea would be to visit your local fabric store and talk with their employees.

Your next step will be to purchase fabric and whatever basic sewing supplies you lack (thread, scissors, measuring tape, patterns, etc). You can find your supplies through your local fabric store or online. If you purchase online, you can find some great deals if you are willing to buy in bulk.

Where to sell will be your next decision. You can sell your product online, or advertise in local papers, you can also contact companies that will mail out advertisements in a package with other local businesses. If you are selling baby or children’s products, then another great place to go is a children’s resale shop. The easiest most cost effective way to get started is to sell via an online auction and build up a client base.

One of the last steps will be to plan for a website. This will make it easier to branch out into different areas and repeat customers will have an established place and email address to contact you. This involves purchasing a domain name, finding a web host, and designing your website. There are paid and free website templates that can be used with little or no knowledge. Some web hosts include a design template with your web hosting account. You can also hire a web designer to put together a site for you but the cost will be higher than doing it yourself.

As you can see it really doesn’t take much to get started. A little research and planning and you will be on your way!
