What Causes Hair Loss in Men Ages 25 to 30?

    Thinning hair is a common condition for men between the ages of 25 and 30. What causes it? While some types of hair loss are caused by family history and genetics, other types of hair loss may be a function of diet or a medical condition. And though some hair loss is permanent, some may be reversible.
  • Hair Growth Patterns

    Throughout life, individual scalp hairs grow in cycles, which vary with each person. Depending on the individual, the growing, or anagen, phase of hair usually lasts for 2 to 6 years; each month during this time, the average hair grows a little less than a 1/2 inch. (During warmer months, the hair may grow faster.) This phase is followed by a resting period of 2 to 4 months, known as the telogen phase. During this time, the hair root, or follicle, weakens, and the hair falls out. Each day, the average person loses up to a hundred hairs; normally, when a hair is lost, a new strand begins growing.
  • Hair Loss Patterns

    When men begin to lose hair between the ages of 25 and 30, their hair loss usually occurs at a greater rate than 50 to 100 strands a day. It may start gradually, with increased "shedding," resulting eventually in a thinner appearance overall in scalp hair, or specific areas where hair is noticeably thinner. Hair loss may also occur very rapidly, over just a few weeks or months. Some hair loss slows down after a period of time, while other types accelerate quickly.


  • Hereditary Factors

    The most common kind of hair loss in men between the ages of 25 and 30 is male-pattern, or permanent-pattern, baldness (androgenetic alopecia), which is caused by hereditary factors. This type of hair loss often first affects the appearance of the hairline and spots at the back of the head and is believed to be a genetic trait inherited through the x chromosome. (Some researchers believe it is a trait inherited only through mothers, as hair loss in men is often the same as that of their maternal grandfathers, but others believe it may be a trait inherited through fathers as well.) With male-pattern hair loss, the growth cycle is shorter, the follicles become thinner and weaker, hair falls out more readily and, eventually, hair is not replaced by new growth.
  • Medical Factors

    Hair loss for men in their twenties may be caused by medical issues. These include hormonal imbalances, certain bacterial and fungal infections, skin conditions affecting the scalp, diseases such as lupus and diabetes, autoimmune diseases and other ailments. Hair loss may also be a side effect of taking certain medications for a variety of conditions and problems and by chemotherapy or radiation.
  • Dietary, Stress and Other Factors

    The appearance, fullness and loss of hair may be affected by diet. Malnutrition can result in hair loss or dullness. Both emotional and physical stress can affect hair growth cycles; after surgery, a death in the family or a similar life-changing event, men between the ages of 25 and 30 may experience dramatic and sudden, though usually temporary, hair loss. Other factors in hair loss may include frequently using harsh chemicals on the hair and scalp, too-tight cornrows, ponytails or other hairstyles, which may put stress on the hair and follicle.

    In determining the cause of hair loss in men ages 25 to 30, it is important to look at family history first, then consider various other options. Did the man's maternal (or paternal) grandfather lose his hair in his twenties? Not only can this offer clues about future appearance, but it can also help reveal patterns of hair thinning in terms of where on the scalp the hair loss occurs, when it occurs and how fast it progresses. If hair loss does not run in the family and the man is losing hair, it is a good idea to schedule a checkup with a medical practitioner. Hair loss may be a sign of a disease, dietary deficiency or a side effect of a medication and should be checked by a professional to determine if it can be reversed, which is sometimes possible.
