How to Change Tanning Bed Bulbs

By Angela Robinson

  • Overview

No matter if you own a tanning bed for personal use or if you maintain one within a salon, you will no doubt have to change the tanning bed bulbs to achieve that deep, dark coveted tan. Changing tanning bed bulbs is just as easy as changing an overhead florescent light, you just have to know the type and size of bulb that is required by the bed's manufacturer.
How to Change Tanning Bed Bulbs
    • Step 1

Know the size needed. Commonly, tanning beds use a F71 type bulb. They are 100 watts and have metal prongs on each end. Bulbs also come in F72 and F73. You must know what your particular tanning bed requires.
    • Step 2

Choose bulb intensity. Standard tanning bed bulbs are equipped with equal UV bulbs and provide a deep tan. Hotter bulbs require a shorter tanning session, but produce a tan that is more superficial.

    • Step 3

Remove the acrylic encasement from the tanning bed's lid and base. With a soft cloth, wipe both sides of acrylic to remove dust particles.
    • Step 4

Check bulb starters. Check the efficiency of the starters to ensure that there is not a delay when your tanning bed is turned on. If your bed is frequently used, replace the starters on an annual basis.
    • Step 5

Replace acrylic encasement. Put the acrylic back into place and clean it again in an effort to remove fingerprints.
    • Skill: Easy
    • Ingredients:
    • Bulbs
    • Bulb starter (if needed)
    • Soft cloth
    • Tip: Some tanning beds require high intensity bulbs. Refer to your bed's specific owner's manual to learn the proper type and size of bulb needed.
    • Warning:
    • Avoid replacing one bulb at a time. When replacing tanning bed bulbs, change all bulbs at the same time.
