The English cottage is usually a vertical design. It is a scaled, or an approachable scaled house. It is not usually ostentatious. It's a friendly type of look because it uses materials that are tactile and there are things going on with different kinds of materials- whether its masonry or stucco. There is the use of shingle siding that helps breakup an elevation and it gives it a nice flavor. Usually your windows are vertical and you can have some different light patterns with that. What's been done now in the last five or ten years, is sort of a morphing from craftsman. So there is not much of a differentiation from bungalow to craftsman to cottage. So I think the characteristics of English cottage would have come over from maybe what would have been the English Tudor in the past. They have come together and kind of melded together somewhat. It is a style that integrates to your exterior surroundings as well. So it looks good in a setting where you have a lot of trees around it and maybe a fair amount of landscaping; the English flower gardens and all that looks good with the cottage design. Usually it has lower ceilings, it's scaled down and a bit lower house.
