Child Safety Tips For The Zoo

Planning on a day at the zoo with your child? Find out some important safety tips you need to know by reading this article today!

Zoos are a great place to take your child so they can see wild animals up close and personal. Your child can get a better understanding of the world around them, especially a world they've probably never seen before, by visiting lions, tigers, bears, and monkeys in their pseudo- natural habitat.

However, there are some safety issues that exist at your local zoo. Since children are extremely curious and energetic by nature, they usually love to run from exhibit to exhibit. If you're taking your child to the local zoo, you'll need to keep him or her with you at all times. One safety issue they face at any public place, is the chance of being kidnapped. While this tip may sound dramatic, it's unfortunately a fact of the world we live in. Children who get separated away from their parents can also simply become lost. And you don't want to spend your day at the zoo searching for your child in exasperation.

Another safety hazard of your child running ahead of you is that they can possibly crawl up on a wall or on an exhibit. Not only do they risk falling and getting injured, but they also risk falling into a pen with a wild animal. This adds the risk of being mauled or bitten to the list of safety issues.

If you need assistance keeping an eye on your child, there are products on the market you can use to keep them close to you. There are long straps you can buy and attach one end to your wrist. The other end attaches comfortably to your child's wrist. That way, you know your son or daughter will literally be "close at hand".

While you're taking your son or daughter a tour through the zoo, pay attention to the posted rules and regulations of the zoo. For example, many zoos post signs that state that feeding the animals is prohibited. This rule has a twofold purpose: it reduces the chances of your child being bitten. And, it helps to keep the animals safe from ingesting a food that they shouldn't have in their diet.

Actually, you and your child should wait to eat your lunch or a snack until you are in a suitable area. You and your child should also wash your hands thoroughly before you touch a drink or a food item.

Petting zoos are a popular way for you to introduce your son or daughter to smaller, domesticated animals such as sheep, lambs, cows, horses, and others. The problem with petting zoos, besides the risk of getting bitten, is that sometimes animals carry the E. coli bacteria. Although experts state that E. coli is not a widespread problem, this bacteria can infect humans and cause serious illness, or even death.

To avoid the possibility of contracting E. coli bacteria as well as any other germs, you should make sure that you and your child wash your hands in soapy hot water after petting the animals.

Also, stay clear of any areas that are contaminated with dung. Don't allow your child to touch their hands to their faces until their hands are washed. You can carry a hand sanitizer product in your purse to use too. Most hand sanitizers have alcohol as their base ingredient. The alcohol acts as a disinfectant.

Finally, don't be afraid to visit a zoo with your child! It can be an educational experience for them that they will remember for a long time. Just be sure to follow the posted safety rules, keep a close watch on your child, and practice even more cleanliness than you do at home.
