There's nothing quite as scrumptious as a piece of moist chocolate cake with creamy chocolate icing. Although there are literally thousands of chocolate cake and frosting recipes available, most contain similar ingredients. Unique chocolate cake recipes are those containing real chocolate and quality ingredients such as genuine butter and real vanilla extract.

The following recipe is for a mouth-watering chocolate cake that will impress even the most finicky chocolate lover. This unique chocolate cake is moist and full of rich chocolate flavor. The creamy, buttery chocolate frosting compliments the full-bodied flavor of the cake.

Velvety Chocolate Cake

½ cup real butter, softened

2 cups granulated sugar

4 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, melted

2 large eggs, beaten

2 cups cake flour, sifted

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1-1/2 cups sweetened condensed milk

1 teaspoon real vanilla extract

1 cup chopped nuts

Cream the butter and sugar together in a large mixing bowl. Stir in the melted chocolate and the beaten eggs. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, vanilla, and milk. Pour it into the first mixture, and beat it by hand for approximately three minutes. The batter will be thin. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans, and bake the cakes in a 350-degree preheated oven for 45 minutes or until done. Cool the cakes on wire racks.

Creamy Chocolate Frosting

½ cup real butter, softened

2 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, melted

1 large egg, beaten

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon real vanilla extract

1 teaspoon real lemon juice

1-1/2 cups powdered sugar

1 cup chopped nuts, optional

Combine the first six ingredients, and gradually blend in the powdered sugar. Beat the mixture by hand until it reaches the proper consistency. Frost the first cooled cake layer, and carefully place the second layer on top. Finish frosting the cake, and sprinkle nuts on the top if desired.

During warmer months, serve this rich chocolate cake with ice-cold glasses of milk or sweet ice tea. For a double dose of chocolate on a cool fall or winter day, serve the cake with a cup of hot chocolate topped with mini marshmallows or with a steaming cup of hot and spicy cinnamon tea.

You can turn your frosted chocolate cake into a work of art by embellishing it with candy and rich chocolate shavings. After frosting the cake, create chocolate curls by shaving the edges of a top-quality chocolate bar with a sharp knife. Add contrast to the cake by creating a border of white chocolate shavings around the perimeter. In the center of the cake create a design using pieces of gummy fruit, candy laces, and other goodies.

You can easily create edible baskets of flowers to top your chocolate cake. Cut peanut butter cups or peppermint patties in half to make chocolate flower pots. Design flowers for the pots by cutting and trimming candy orange slices and other gummy fruit slices. Use small gum drops to create the centers of the flowers, and trim pieces of green apple-flavored licorice or green fruit slices to make edible stems and foliage. Make a grassy green background for the potted flowers by tossing sweetened shredded coconut with several drops of green food coloring. Make smaller flowers to place in the coconut grass using smaller bits of gum drops, gummy fruit, and colored licorice.

There are many different colors, shapes, and designs of gummy candies available. There are animals, fruit shapes, and even popular cartoon characters. Use your imagination to create an edible work of art that is appropriate for the season or occasion. An ordinary chocolate cake will become extraordinarily pleasing to the eye as well as the palate.
