Step 1
Vacuum children's area rugs daily to prevent dust and dirt build-up. Clean rugs when children are not in the room to ensure a thorough cleaning. Use a heavy-traffic rug cleaner every three months or so to remove dirt underneath the carpet pile.
-
Step 2
Remove stains (juice, soda or food stains) before they set to avoid permanent damage to the rug. Pre-treat dark stains with baking soda or salt. Gently rub in 1 tsp. of baking soda or salt into the stain using a wet cloth. Rub in a circular motion, and do not apply too much pressure.

Step 3
Let the baking soda or salt penetrate the stain for at least 5 minutes. Use a wet cloth to wipe away excess baking soda or salt before vacuuming. If the stain still appears dark, use carbonated water to dilute. Vacuum over the stain to remove any remaining color. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 if necessary.
