How to Clean Engineered Hardwood Floors

By Katherine Kally

  • Overview

Cleaning your engineered hardwood floors is similar to cleaning other type of wood floor. Some of the important things to remember are to never leave water standing on your hardwoods, engineered or otherwise. Always use a soft cloth or padding to clean your hardwoods. And, never use products specifically designed for other flooring on your hardwood floors. Cleaning products designed for tile or linoleum will likely cause your hardwoods to streak and appear dull.

    • Step 1

Remove any debris from your hardwood floor with a broom or a vacuum. Cleaning your engineered hardwood is easiest if your have a clear surface. So, move any furniture or other obstacles from the path you wish to clean.
    • Step 2

Add hot water to your bucket and mix a small amount of white vinegar in with the water. Hot water cleans best, but warm water also works well. If the manufacturer of your engineered hardwoods recommended only cleaning with water, you can try the mixture of vinegar and water on a sample area that is not normally seen (under a rug or the sofa) before using it on the entire floor.

    • Step 3

Dip your sponge mop into the vinegar and water and squeeze out the excess water. Your mop should not be soaking wet when you use it on your hardwoods. Water can get into the cracks of the flooring and cause your floor to swell and buckle.
    • Step 4

Mop your floor until you have cleaned the desired area. Mop your way out of the room; don't walk over your mopped surface.
    • Step 5

Dry your engineered hardwood floors with a soft, dry cloth. Place the cloth on the floor and skate around with it until your floors are dry. You could also get on your hands and knees and dry it, but skating is more fun and just as effective.
    • Step 6

Clean your hardwoods with a Swiffer wetjet and the swiffer product for hardwoods if you prefer a faster, easier way to clean. Load the cleaner in the Swiffer as directed by the instructions on the mop and place the Swiffer pad on the bottom of the mop. Squeeze the trigger, releasing a small amount of cleaner. Go over the surface with the pad. Continue until your hardwood floor is clean. You do not need to dry the hardwoods separately if you use a Swiffer.
