How to Clean Fans in a Dell Deminsion 5100

By C.D. Crowder

  • Overview

Fans are responsible for keeping your computer system cool. Overheating is one of the main causes of motherboard, processor and hard drive failures. Cleaning the fans in a Dell Dimension 5100 is easy and should be done regularly. The type of environment determines exactly how often the fans should be cleaned. Dusty environments will attract more dirt and dust, so cleaning should occur weekly. For a normal environment, such as the home or office, the fans should be cleaned at least once per month for optimal results.

    • Step 1

Turn off and unplug your Dell Dimension 5100 desktop. Turn the tower so the back of the unit is facing you.
    • Step 2

Remove the screws holding the case cover in place and carefully remove the cover.

    • Step 3

Spray the compressed air on the CPU fan and power supply fan in turn. Hold the compressed air can at least 6 inches away from the fans as your spray.
    • Step 4

Use the compressed air to blow out any remaining dust in the case to prevent it from being sucked into the fans.
    • Step 5

      Replace the case cover.
    • Skill: Moderately Easy
    • Ingredients:
    • Compressed air
    • Computer toolkit or electronics screwdriver set
    • Tip: If you want to avoid opening the case monthly, you can clean the power supply fan by spraying compressed air straight into the fan on the back of the computer tower. Spray compressed air into the case through the vent holes to help clear out dust in the CPU fan.
    • Warning:
    • Never spray fans too closely. You can damage the motherboard with moisture from the air.
