How to Clean the Red Ink on a Brother Printer

By Heidi Braley

  • Overview

Brother printers are a great addition to an office, whether it's located at work or at home. You will need to maintain these printers, but the manufacturer has made them very user-friendly. If you notice that your printed page does not look the version you saw on your monitor, you may need to run a cleaning cycle on your printer. There are four cartridges on a Brother printer--black, yellow, blue and red--and any of them can have a clogged nozzle. If you notice that the red ink, for instance, is not showing up on your documents, follow these instructions.

    • Step 1

Look at the LCD screen to see if there are any error messages. Sometimes, you may think that the nozzle for the ink cartridge is blocked, when the cartridge is actually empty. If this is the case, the LCD screen will show an error message that the red ink is empty. If there is no error message, press the "Ink" button to the top left of the LCD screen. Choose "Cleaning" from the drop-down menu.
    • Step 2

Hit "OK." This will open a sub-menu that lists "Color" and "Black" as cleaning options. Choose "Color" for the red cartridge and hit "OK" again. The machine will automatically start the cleaning process. Make sure you have a clean sheet of paper in the feed bin.

    • Step 3

Inspect the printout from the cleaning process. If the block of red-ink squares is clean and all of the small squares are visible, continue with printing as normal. However, if the printout does not look right, repeat the cleaning process. This uses a lot of ink, so two or three times should be plenty to get a crisp readout.
    • Skill: Easy
    • Tip: This process can be followed for any of the colors of ink in the Brother printers
