All About Clinique Cosmetics

Clinique, originally an offshoot of the Estee Lauder Company, was founded in 1968 by a single dermatologist on the unique charter which began with the basic assumption that hygiene and cleanliness are the foundations for treating all skin conditions. Clinique strives to customize its skin care approach to each individual customer's needs and skin condition.

Clinique's customized skin-care is achieved using a two-step process. First, each customer completes an online survey or is examined professionally at a Clinique cosmetic counter to determine their skin type. The scientific method used takes into account numerous skin types, eye colors, facial and lip types, the skin's reaction to sun exposure, pore size, frequency of breakouts, and appearance of surface facial lines. Second, based on the findings of the survey or examination, a recommendation is offered regarding a skin care regimen and make-up products appropriate for the customer's skin type and coloring.

Clinique's specially-formulated skin care system consists of a three-step system: cleansing, exfoliate, and moisturizing the skin. Cleanse with soap to loosen dirt, oil, and dead skin cells, sweep clarifying lotion over skin with a 100% triple size cotton ball to remove the dead skin cells, and then apply moisturizer to dry areas to balance moisture levels in the skin. In the skin care product line three cleansers, five clarifying lotions, and two moisturizers are available to mix-and-match as necessary in order to be most effective for each Clinique customer. Customers are taught how to use each product for optimal results.

In addition to the three-step system, an additional line of specialized skin care products is available including Naturally Gentle Eye Makeup Remover and Stop Sign, an anti-aging serum formulated to be used by all customers regardless of their skin types. Stop Sign, which was introduced to the line in 1999, tackles the signs of aging in three steps. First, it repairs the appearance of fine lines. Next, it evens skin tone and corrects discoloration. Finally, it prevents future skin damage with a patented blend of anti-oxidants.

Along with the line of skin care products, Clinique has a number of additional product lines available to customers both online and at local cosmetic counters. These lines include: make-up, hair care, sun and body care, fragrance, and products for men. In addition to a three-step skin care system, the men's line also includes specially formulated shaving products, a sunless bronzer, antiperspirant deoderant, and fragrance products.

In March 2005, Phillip Shearer, president of Clinique, announced that Clinique Laboratories is establishing a Skin Wellness Center at Weill Cornell Medical College. The center is scheduled to open in Fall 2006 and represents the first time that a cosmetic company has partnered with a medical institution in order to improve skin health. The center will include patient treatment rooms, a patient waiting room, and in information center with both printed materials and information presented on computer terminals sponsored by Clinique.

Clinique is recognized as the global leader in dermatologist-approved, fragrance-free, allergy-tested cosmetics and Weill Cornell is the international leader in academic dermatologic medicine. The jointly-sponsored program will include scientific research, community outreach forums on skin care, an annual symposium for health professionals, educational programs for patients, and the establishment of an academic fellowship.
