A Collie is a well known breed of dog that has been in existence for hundred of years. Strong, intelligent, and energetic, the Collie dog originally came from Scotland in the eighteen hundreds.
This type of canine was used by sheep herders in the fields and green knolls of Scotland to round up the flocks. It wasn't until the late eighteen hundreds that the Collie finally came to the United States.
Usually having brownish and white colored coats, a male Collie pup can grow up to be about two feet tall and be around sixty to seventy pounds in weight. The female Collies tend to be a little smaller in height and weight. This type of canine often has a long, rough coat of dense fur. Or, it can have a shorter, softer coat. Just like other breeds of dogs that don't shed their fur a lot, a Collie only needs brushed and groomed every week or so. Of course, the long haired canine might need additional grooming in order to keep their fur free of tangles and snags.
There are actually two types of the Collie canine breed. They are the Border Collie and the Bearded Collie. The Border Collie also came from Scotland. It's strong and energetic, and is easily trained.
This breed of dog originally started out as a sheep and cattle herder, but it's uses have evolved to include other purposes as well. They now are trained to aid police bomb squads and search and rescue teams, just to name a few of their uses.
The Bearded Collie tends to be larger than its cousin because it's actually a descendent of the English Sheepdog. In fact, it's also called a "Highland Sheep Dog." This type of canine always has a long, dense, hairy coat of fur. It gets its name because it has long hair running from its chin down to its chest.
Their fur is usually black, brown, or tan in color. It needs to be brushed and groomed more regularly because of its thickness and length.
Just like the Border Collie, the Bearded Collie is also known as being strong and energetic. It's affectionate and good natured personality make it a wonderful companion.
All Collie dogs make good guard dogs with their watchful eyes and their loud bark. And, since they are so full of pep and vim, they need to be exercised on a regular basis. Therefore, the best home for a Collie would be one that has a large grassy yard for it to run and play in.
Collies typically live to be between eight and fifteen years of age.
Because of the popularity of the Collie canine, there was a club started in the late eighteen hundreds. The Collie Club of America, Incorporated, is one of the oldest such clubs. The purpose of the Collie Club is to improve this breed of dog. Today, it has grown to approximately two thousand members.
