Ideas for volunteering in their community. Helpful information about types of volunteer jobs and positions.
Volunteering can be a very rewarding experience. A lot of people may say that they do not have time to volunteer. We, as a society, have busy schedules in deed! How can we possibly fit one more thing into our already-too-busy schedule? It's not impossible. And I believe that not only is it well worth it, but we might even, dare I say, sort of owe the community some volunteer work. Not owe in the way that you MUST pay back, but owe in the way that people have done so much for us, it is only right to give back to the community.
It doesn't have to be much time that you give up that you volunteer. Volunteering activities are just that- voluntary. They aren't going to force you to give up your Saturday mornings or your Friday nights. You pick the hours, and you pick how long you stay at your chosen volunteering place. You also do not have to pick a volunteering opportunity that occurs every week. You can just volunteer on an as needed basis. Both work out well. It depends on your time schedule, your interests, and your willingness to give up time to give back to your community.
What kinds of volunteering activities are there? This list is endless. There are so many volunteering ideas, and there is something for everyone, time wise, and interest wise.
Some ideas of volunteering ideas are:
1. Volunteering in your church. There are many church opportunities. Often, they will want volunteers to do clerical work for the church. They may need people to decorate and pick up after parties the church throws. They may need volunteers to sing or play an instrument during the service. Maybe they need people to teach the children's Sunday school, or to tend to the babies in the nursery. Volunteers are often needed to drive canned goods to less fortunate people on holidays or other occasions. Volunteers are needed to lead Bible studies. Volunteers are often needed to lead ministries. Often there are boy scout and girl scout type groups, with a religious twist on them in the church, and the churches often look for volunteers to lead those groups. The opportunities in the church setting are basically endless. Churches always need help.
2. Meals on Wheels. Volunteers are needed often to drive a weeks worth or so of food to handicapped or elderly people who can not do it themselves. Again, you pick the times you can do this and how many hours a week you can do this.
3.Rape Crisis Center. The Rape Crisis Center is virtually always looking for volunteers. They often look for hotline counselors and also often look for court advocates, people who go to court with victims, basically for support. Court advocates are usually people that are interested in law, but they don't have to be. Hotline counselors are usually people that are interesting in counseling, but they don't have to be. You will have to attend about 30 hours of training over a period of eight weeks or so before you can be a court advocate or hotline counselor. Hotline counselors also sometimes will accompany a rape victim to a hospital for the after rape exam.
4. Nursing homes. Nursing homes are almost always looking for volunteers. As a volunteer at a nursing home, you would basically just give much needed company to elderly people. Elderly people love getting company when they are at nursing homes. Often you will also help the activities director with activities for the elderly people. You may throw parties for them, play games with them, do the womans' nails, or just talk to them. Again, volunteering at a nursing home is always a good move for your career, too, especially if you are interested in working with the elderly. And their hours can be very flexible, such as you might be able to go in on the weekends, not only during the week.
5. Hospitals. If you are interested in medicine, or nursing, a hospital is a great place for you to volunteer. Even if you aren't interested in medicine, it can still be a good place for you to volunteer. Hospitals offer a lot of clerical volunteering jobs, and some jobs such as playing with kids in the day care or a pediatric playroom, you also may do things such as folding gowns, or escorting patients to X-rays or their surgeries.
6. Crisis Pregnancy Centers- These are often Christian-affiliated. There are many opportunities with these centers. You can do clerical work, you can help on occasion, such as when a party is going on, or you can be a counselor. There are also opportunities sometimes with going to schools and preaching abstinence. You also may be able to help with their newsletters, if you have talent at writing. Counselors need to be trained, and will be on a hotline number.
There are numerous other volunteering jobs, such as day cares, soup kitchens, orphanages, shelters, and a lot more. You may want to call your local volunteer services and ask them to send you a packet of possible volunteering opportunities in your community. Or you can just call certain human service places in your phone book that seem like they might be interesting to volunteer at, and ask if they have any volunteering opportunities. Good luck!
