Basically you have your heat source, which can be a furnace, boiler, hot water heater, heat pump or solar panel. Then you have a control system that usually consists of a manifold, which is a set of ports for the tubing to tie into and the thermostat control panel. The thermostat ties into that and a series of valves and a pump that pushes water to the areas that need it. Then you have the piping system, which routes out from that manifold to a bedroom, the living room, or different areas of the house.
In a typical heating cycle, a thermostat will come on and call for heat. It would open the valve and turn on the pump. Hot water would flow through that piping for that room, warming up the floor. Eventually, the thermostat will be satisfied and shut off.
