How to Connect a Projector to a Computer Via Leads

  • Overview

Any time you will be giving a presentation that requires the use of a projector, you should go in with the expectation that you will have to set up your computer or laptop and the projector yourself. There may not be anyone there who can help you, and it won't make you look good if you can't figure out how to show the presentation.
How to Connect a Projector to a Computer Via Leads
    • Step 1

Turn the projector and the computer off.
    • Step 2

Connect the video cable. The video cable has a male lead on each end. One end goes into the "External Monitor" port on the computer and the other end goes into the "Computer In" port on the projector. It doesn't matter which end of the cable goes to which machine.

    • Step 3

Tighten the connection on both ends firmly. Some video cables will have small screws with rubber handles located on the leads for this purpose.
    • Step 4

Connect the audio cable. One end goes into the "Audio Out" port on the computer and the other end goes into the "Audio In" port on the projector.
    • Step 5

Tighten the connections firmly on both ends just as you did with the video cable in step 3.
    • Step 6

Power on the computer and the projector.
    • Skill: Moderately Easy
    • Ingredients:
    • Computer
    • Projector
    • Video cable
    • Audio cable
    • Tip: Do a dry run before the presentation to make sure it is working right and the audio is adjusted to the right volume and EQ if necessary.
    • Tip: If you are using a laptop, use the power cord to avoid having the screen go dark or the battery die in the middle of your presentation.
