Core workout is focussing on the mid section of the body. The definition of the muscles of the core would be the internal and external oblique, rectus abdominus and the transverse abdominus. That's one version of the core. I tend to think that if you are talking about the core and the torso musculature you need to add the back musculature which would be the quadratus lumborum the multifidus. We talked to Pilates instructors and their idea of the core will be the pelvic muscle. So you got the different versions of the core but they are all talking really about the same area as the torso and the hip area.

What's important in training the core is to teach the muscles to work as a unit more so than to break them down and teach them to work individually.

Done right, it lends for a lot of support, stability and activities of daily living. In other words they can really decrease the potential of back injuries dramatically if people strengthen and work their cores as a unit.
