There are two different types of treatment; inpatient and outpatient. Inpatient rehabilitation is when someone is incapable of abstaining from a particular drug and they need 24 hour monitoring and extensive treatment. Inpatient detoxification is when a person is so addicted to a particular drug that their bodies physically cannot survive without it and they need to be medically weaned off that drug. Otherwise, they will just die. With drugs, unlike cigarettes, you can't stop cold turkey. The body has become so dependent upon it that it will just stop working in the absence of that drug. That will be a medical process to slowly work the patient off the drug. Those are the two most extensive forms of treatment; inpatient detoxification and inpatient rehabilitation. After that process, the inpatient process is the outpatient process where they may not necessarily need 24 hour a day monitoring. They may not necessarily need to be hospitalized. They can go to an outpatient clinic, be treated and then go home. Every individual may have different needs. Some patients, after being evaluated, may not need an inpatient stay. They may not need to be hospitalized. They could be just an outpatient. The deciding factor is if someone is incapable of abstaining from the drug they need to be hospitalized. Inpatient treatment gets the people off the drugs. Outpatient keeps them off the drugs. It is an easy way to look at.

The different levels of care may be priced differently. Inpatient, of course, is much more expensive because it is a hospital setting. I know that there was a time that it could cost $30,000 for a month to stay in an inpatient facility and some people will you know sell their homes to be able to afford it. The cost of treatment has come down you know from $1000 a day. It could be as little as $250-$400 a day for an inpatient stay. Inpatient detox is a lot more expensive. That could be a $1000 a day. Outpatient treatment is a lot less. It could be $40-$60 a day. Also the patient may not necessarily need to come to an outpatient program everyday. If they are hospitalized, it's a day-to-day thing. In a less severe outpatient program, someone could be coming four times a week. They could be attending two times a week or they could just be attending once a week. You are looking at outpatient treatment by the time you have engaged in the program to the time that you finish. Inpatient hospitalization and inpatient rehab could be anyway between 7-30 days usually. Inpatient detox could be 3-7 days. Outpatient treatment could be anywhere between 6-12 months. For someone who required outpatient treatment, I would recommend to have at least $5000 throughout the course of time after being treated for $40-$60 a session. Someone who is going to an inpatient facility would need $15,000 or at least $7000 for inpatient detoxification. Now the good news is substance abuse treatment is a billable service from insurance companies. Most insurance plans include substance abuse benefit as well as Medicaid.
