How to Cover Acne With Simple Products

By Genevieve Van Wyden

  • Overview

Acne can be an embarrassing and frustrating condition. Acne sufferers may try to cover up the blemishes, while at the same time attempting to dry them up so they will fade away. It isn't enough to wash daily with an anti-acne facial cleanser and dab an astringent on the blemishes. Young women (and older women) can minimize the appearance of pimples with makeup.
    • Step 1

Wash skin (facial or otherwise) carefully and gently with an anti-acne facial cleanser. Find these cleansers at a local drugstore or supermarket. Pat skin dry (do not rub). Use a cotton pad and dab an astringent on blemishes. Let the astringent dry before applying anything else to skin.
    • Step 2

Apply an oil free moisturizer gently to the skin, massaging it into the skin from the hairline to the underside of the chin. Be careful about rubbing moisturizer into skin--vigorous rubbing can irritate skin inflamed by acne and make the problem worse. It is important to moisturize skin before applying cosmetics. This allows skin to stay moist, meaning the oil glands in the skin will not have to work overtime, producing even more oil. Do not apply any moisturizer to the eyelids or under-eye skin; these products are too heavy for the very delicate skin on this part of the face.

    • Step 3

Dab an oil-free cover-up stick on a makeup sponge, then blot the makeup sponge on visible blemishes. Cover blemishes on the neck and chest, too.
    • Step 4

Apply an oil-free foundation to the makeup sponge and gently blot it to the face. Pat the foundation onto skin; do not rub it in.
    • Step 5

Set the foundation by applying a non-talc cosmetic powder with a soft brush.
    • Skill: Moderately Easy
    • Tip: Instead of popping pimples, dry them up with regular application of an astringent.
    • Tip: Drink plenty of water and eat fresh fruits, vegetables and lean meats, fish and chicken. It isn't necessary to completely eliminate fried foods or chocolates, but eating a healthier diet will visibly benefit skin.
    • Tip: If a blemish does pop, blot the blood and any pus with a soft facial tissue and allow the air to dry it.
    • Tip: Make sure your blush and eye shadow are oil-free. Blush or shadow can be in powder or cream form.
