You will need a wire coat hanger, string, and a hole punch. Other than these necessary items, you can use a variety of materials to make mobiles.

It is fun to make mobiles for special occasions. Baby items make a fun mobile for decoration at a baby shower. Heart mobiles are attractive at Valentine's Day. Dried flowers and pinecones make a fun cabin mobile.

Baby rattles, metal jar rings, old jewelry, dried clay shapes, paper dolls, rolled balls of aluminum foil, painted toothpicks or straws, puzzle pieces, popscicle sticks, ornaments, and toys are a few of the many items that can be used on mobiles.

Making a mobile out of construction paper or cardboard is fun. Cut different shapes such as circles, squares, triangles, and stars out of the construction paper or cardboard. They can also be painted or decorated in any way you like. It is fun to use old buttons, ribbon, sequins, stickers, crayons, tempera paints, and fabric to decorate each piece. The shapes can be many different sizes. Three or four inches in diameter is a good size but you can experiment to decide which sizes you like the best. Punch a hole at the top of each shape and tie a piece of string to it. Using the other end of the string, tie it to the wire coat hanger. A hole can be punched in the bottom of a shape and another shape can be tied to it instead of tying it to the wire coat hanger. Tie a piece of string at the top of the hanger and hang from a ceiling, window, or doorway.

Using driftwood of different sizes can also make mobiles. A piece of wood about the size of a wire coat hanger can be used in place of the hanger. Make sure the wood is light. If you use a piece of wood in place of the hanger, use a strong wire to hang it from the ceiling or doorway. Make sure the wood is light and the string is strong enough to hold the wood.

A Christmas mobile made with ornaments is festive. Old Christmas cards make a memorable mobile. Cut out pictures from the cards into different shapes and sizes. Attach the cards in the same way, punching a hole at the top of the card and tying a piece of string to it and tying the other end of the string to the wire coat hanger.

A ghost mobile for Halloween can be made with cotton balls and Kleenex. Put the cotton ball in the center of a Kleenex. Cover the cotton ball with the Kleenex and tie a string around the Kleenex under the cotton ball. The cotton ball is the ghost's head. Draw two black eyes on the head. String on the wire hanger with different lengths of string.

It is fun to experiment with different sizes and shapes. You can balance two shapes underneath a larger shape. With any mobile you will have to experiment with where to put the various shapes and items to get the mobile to balance and hang correctly.
