Create A Fleur De Lys Napkin Fold

Give your formal table setting a glamorous touch by adding fleur de lys napkin folds. This design looks very complex but is simple to create.

Decoratively folded napkins have been staples of the formal table setting since the 16th century. For little or no cost and a minimum expense of effort, you can add a bit of glamour and style to your own table. You can use this fleur de lys design for any holiday or special occasion that requires an especially formal napkin fold.

Decorative napkin folding is a relatively simple endeavor and most designs can be completed in just a couple of minutes. To fold the design presented here (and just about every other design, as well) you will need a square cloth napkin, an iron and ironing board, a ruler, and some straight pins. Using the ironing board as a folding surface works well as it allows you to press the napkin without worrying about damaging the underlying surface.

1. Position a pressed, square cloth napkin on your work surface so that its points are facing up and down, left and right. If applicable, make sure that the textured or printed side of the napkin is facing down.

2. Bring the bottom point up to meet the top point. Press with an iron to set the crease and allow the fabric to cool.

3. Bring the lower left point of the resulting triangle up to meet the top point. Press with an iron to set the crease and allow the fabric to cool. Repeat for the triangle's lower right point.

4. Use a ruler and straight pins to mark the horizontal center of the diamond shaped napkin. No more than two or three pins are necessary.

5. Bring the bottom point of the napkin up toward the horizontal center marked out in Step 4. Stop at a point just across the horizontal line. Press with an iron to set the crease and allow the fabric to cool. Remove the straight pins.

6. Bring the point folded up in Step 5 down to a point that is just short of the newly formed bottom edge. Press with an iron to set the crease and allow the fabric to cool. This forms a sort of pleat at the bottom of the napkin.

7. Turn the napkin over and position it so that the edge created in Step 5 is facing you.

8. Use a ruler and straight pins to mark the vertical center of the napkin. No more than one or two pins are necessary - concentrate on the bottom of the napkin.

9. Bring the bottom left corner of the napkin to the right, just past the vertical center line created in Step 8. An angled fold will appear at the lower left side of the napkin. Hold in place and remove the straight pins.

10. Bring the bottom right point of the napkin over to tuck securely into the angled fold that appeared in Step 9. An identical angled fold will appear on the lower right side of the napkin.

11. Turn the top edge of the angled folds downward just a bit and set the napkin upright on its bottom edge.

12. Position the napkin so that the portions tucked in during Step 10 are to the back.

13. Bring the napkin's left pointed flap down to just barely tuck into the side. Repeat for the right flap to complete the fleur de lys.
