Create An Inviting Atmosphere With Lighting

A guide to the some of the many kinds of lighting techniques available. Learn how to create an inviting atmosphere with the use of lighting.

Lighting is one of the most important elements in any home. Effective lighting can not only set a mood but actually make people feel and look better. Unfortunately this very important design element sometimes gets overlooked when planning and designing a room. Luckily it's also one of the easiest problems to correct.

There are several ways you can create an inviting atmosphere in your home using effective lighting techniques.

One way is with the use of candles. Candles can make a room look cozy, romantic and warm. They also give a subtle glow to many people's skin tones. Visit a local candle or home decorating store for materials. You should find dozens of kinds in all different shapes and sizes. Pay attention to the color, scent and shape of the candle. For a cozy look, pick out candles in warm colors like soft greens and bright yellows. Group them on top of a table and turn off the rest of the lights in the room. If you want a romantic feel, bring the candles into your biggest bathroom. Chose lots of small shapes in shades of pink and red. Scatter a few around the perimeter of the bathtub for a sexy rendezvous.

Candles can easily spread fires so take safety precautions. Place them in holders like hurricane lamps or glass jars. If you leave them on surface make sure to put them on top of plastic or a plate. If you have small children in the house make sure the candles are somewhere where the children can't get to them.

Another way to make lighting more effective in your home is with the use of dimmer switches. Dimmer switches allow you to choose the level of light given out by a light bulb. On a cold winter night when snow is falling right beside your window you can turn the lights on low to showcase the beauty outside. Or you can push the switch as far as it will go and focus everyone's attention on a great room detail like an original piece of artwork or a new fireplace mantle.

If you don't want to install a dimmer switch you can purchase light bulbs of varying intensity. A 40 watt bulb creates a far different mood in a room than one with 120 watts. Place the former in a small corner to use as a spotlight when reading. The latter can used in a room that does not get lots of sunlight. The bright light will make the room seem more inviting. You might also want to consider the purchase of light bulbs in different colors. If you're holding a party, scatter different colored light bulbs throughout the house to complement the décor and food. If you have red upholstery in the living room, bring in a few orange and yellow bulbs and the details on the fabric will stand out even more.

The use of track lighting is another great way to create a mood. Track lighting is lighting that consists of several small lamps that can be positioned along a track. Place them directly above a comfy couch to create a seating area that will easily lend itself to many activities. If track lighting doesn't appeal to you, you can also get the same effect from the use of table lamps. Find a style that you like and scatter them on a few tables in a room. At night this will divide a room into several different areas that can be used for various activities.

If your home doesn't get a lot of sunlight consider adding a skylight. Skylights are a great way to create an airy and inviting atmosphere in any room. A view of clouds and sky overhead makes any room feel open and airy. Installing a skylight is a fairly simple and easy process that will enhance the value of your home. They can be used to great effect in attics or bathrooms or even bedrooms.

Carefully choosing the right kind of lighting will help you enjoy your home for a long time.
