They are plants like a Japanese Aurelia. That plant is huge. It gets four feet tall by 4-6 feet wide. If you don't like the tropical type thing, you can put a Japanese Aurelia underneath to grow around the bottom of trees. If your goal is to create different levels, you get an elevation with the Aurelia. Your plant selection is the main thing. I will go about it by basically picking types of plants that are going to do the job and then I would utilize putting the taller plants in the rear and then coming forward with short plants unless you want an area where you want to hang over a wall or where something is going to breakup the corner or curb. You can also have that effect with some lantana if it is in the sun. The yellow lantana gets a little bit taller. It will get a little bit taller and creep across the path if you let it or you can cut it back depending on how you want it to look. You also try to pick plants that would attract the kinds of animals that you would want in your yard.

If they want, they can attract hummingbirds. The shrimp plant I believe is one that does that. You definitely want to use something that attracts different types of creatures. Of course, no snakes if possible.
