How To Cure A Yeast Infection

There are many types of yeast infections. Learn how to treat common fungal growths here.

The mere mention of a yeast infection makes most women cringe. Yeast infections take many forms however, and are not limited to vaginal infections.

DEFINITION

Yeast infections are fungal in nature, often developing on moist areas of the skin. Yeast infections range from mild to serious and each needs to be treated differently. The most common yeast infections are:

THRUSH

Thrush is a type of Candida infection which appears most commonly in the mouth. If left untreated or if infection is severe, thrush can spread to the esophagus and hinder swallowing.

SYMPTOMS

Patches of white bumps (resembling milk curds) that appear on the tongue.

Yellow patches of raised skin on the gums or tongue.

Dry mouth.

Difficulty swallowing.

Sore throat.

Lack of appetite.

Pain in neck or surrounding lymph nodes.

CAUSES

Lowered immune system.

Antibiotics.

Dental irritation.

TRADITIONAL THERAPY

MOUTH RINSE

A homemade mouth rinse of 1-part hydrogen peroxide and 2-parts warm water is usually all the treatment needed. Gargle and rinse mouth 4-times daily. Over-the-counter mouth antiseptics will work in much the same fashion.

LOZENGES

Mouths which are dry can be soothed with lozenges. Throat lozenges containing clotrimazole also work to keep bacteria and fungus at bay.

ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT

GERANIUM

Native Americans have been treating oral thrush infections for centuries with geranium. Geranium is best taken in tincture form several times daily.

ACIDOPHILUS

Acidophilus is one of the "good" bacterias that works by balancing out the body. Acidophilus can be taken in pill form or as a yogurt product.

VITAMINS

Taking 500-1000 mg. of vitamin C every day for 1-week will reduce inflammation.

TEAS

Herbal teas containing Pau d'arco bark will speed healing. Pau d'arco is a natural antifungal. Add 2-tablespoons to each cup of hot water. Drink 2-6 cups per day.

PREVENTION

Eat 1/2-cup of yogurt daily.

Add acidophilus to your vitamin ritual.

Brush teeth 3-times daily.

Repair ill fitting dentures or other dental appliances.

Rinse mouth after meals.

CANDIDIASIS

Candidiasis is a common yeast infection which affects the mucous membranes of the vagina.

SYMPTOMS

Vaginal itching.

Discomfort during sexual intercourse.

Burning pain while urinating.

Soreness in the vaginal region.

Thick cheese-like discharge.

CAUSES

Pregnancy.

Poor hygiene.

Illness.

TRADITIONAL TREATMENT

ANTIFUNGAL MEDICATIONS

There are many OTC antifungal medications available today. Medications containing butoconazole, micojazole, nystatin, terconazole, or clotrimazole can be used to treat symptoms and their cause.

ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT

BORIC ACID

Inserting boric acid tablets directly into the vagina successfully rids the body of excess bacteria and fungus. Insert tablets twice per day for 2-4 weeks.

VITAMINS

Taking 500-1,000 mg. of vitamin C and 200-400 i of vitamin E will reduce inflammation and ease pain.

EVENING PRIMROSE

Evening Primrose is an essential fatty acid known as omega-3. Taking evening primrose daily for one week will reduce swelling and irritation in the vaginal region.



GARLIC

Garlic is a natural antibiotic and antifungal. You can consume garlic in food or take it in pill

form.

SAGE

Sage is another antifungal. Sage is available in cream form, which can be applied directly to the affected area,

TEA TREE OIL

Tea tree oil can be applied topically or diluted and used as a douche.

FOODS

During a yeast infection, what you eat can make all the difference in the world. Lower your consumption of animal fats and by-products. Replace them nuts and fish.

PREVENTION

Always wear underwear with a cotton crotch to promote air circulation.

Don't use scented tampons.

Wear loose fitting clothing, especially jeans.

Don't use soap to wash vaginal area. Rinse with water or medicated douche instead.

Don't wear pantyhose for extended periods of time.

Wash undergarments in detergent and bleach.

ATHLETE'S FOOT

Athlete's foot is another fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of yeast.

SYMPTOMS

Itchy scales between toes.

Dry skin on the soles of feet.

Unusual odor on feet.

Cracked or blistered skin between toes or on sole of foot.

CAUSES

Using public bathing facilities.

Poor hygiene.

Moisture.

TRADITIONAL TREATMENT

ANTIFUNGAL CREAMS

Creams, lotions, and sprays containing terbinafine HCI, tolnaflate, and miconazole nitrate are available OTC. Apply several times daily. Other antifungal creams and sprays will produce similar results.

POWDERS

Antifungal powders applied directly after an evening bath or shower will speed healing and relieve itching and burning pain. Sprinkling the feet with cornstarch or other foot powders before putting on socks will also help to keep the feet dry and comfortable during the day.

ANTI-ITCH

Cortisone creams and other anti-itch lotions and creams can be used to control itching and irritation.

ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS

ACIDOPHILUS is a healthy bacteria which can be ingested to balance the system. East 1/2-1 cup of acidophilus yogurt each day or take 250 mg., twice daily.

PAU D'ARCO has been used for centuries in Europe to treat vaginal yeast infections. Pau D' Arco can be taken in tincture form or ingested as a tea.

TEA TREE OIL

You can reduce inflammation, pain, and burning by applying tea tree oil directly to the affected skin. Apply topically up to 3-times daily.

MARIGOLD

Marigold can be mixed into a small amount of petroleum jelly and applied to the skin. You can apply marigold twice daily.

PREVENTION

Always wear cotton socks.

Wear shoes that breathe or provide for adequate ventilation.

Don't wear socks to bed.

Wash feet several times daily.

Use powder or cornstarch to help absorb sweat and moisture.

DAILY PREVENTATIVE MEASURES TO KEEP YEAST AT BAY

Yeast infections develop when bad bacteria grows out-of-control, overpowering the body's good bacteria. You can help to balance your body by watching what you eat and taking supplements.
