You are always going to focus on the primary focal point, which in most cases is the home itself. From that point, depending on how the yard is landscaped and the features in a landscape, you can have secondary supplemental focal points.

For example, if you have a house on a regular interior with a lot on a subdivision, it may have a nice wooden or French door. You would try to draw as much attention as you can to the entry. From that point, you start to illuminate other areas around it to balance it, but also illuminate those softly so that you don't detract from the primary focal point.

The concept is basically the same for a large yard. The only thing that you want to concern yourself with is that you don't use too much and you don't use too little. Never have identical layouts between two houses. A small yard can take just as many lights as a larger yard depending on what is there; matured trees as opposed to young trees. Even elaborate landscaping such as flower beds throughout the property as opposed to just one flower bed against the house all factor into consideration.
