The island of Deer Isle, Maine is actually made up of Little Deer Isle and Deer Isle. When you come across the bridge you end up on Little Deer Isle, and then when you cross the crossway onto Deer Isle, there are two cities, Deer Village and Stonington. Stonington is the largest town on the island. The island is 12 miles long. We are about halfway down, and Stonington is at the end. Our population is around 3,000 year around (about 1,500 in each town). It doubles in the summertime. The Maine Craft Association used to be here. Haystack Mountain School of Crafts is here now. It's a world renowned art school. Lots of artists who came to the school decided to stay. It is amazing the talent of the artists that are on this island. There used to be a French camp as well. It turned into a sailing school, and a lot of people have stayed here from that as well. Our population is very diverse. We have the native islanders who are mostly craftsmen and fishermen, and then we have the people from farther away. We have retired corporation presidents, executives, and people who are needed to run the city like ambulance drivers. We have a good local medical center. Everything is connected by bridge. It definitely makes it easier than getting boats back and forth. We have a lot of bed and breakfasts, lots of inns, and quite a few wonderful restaurants with fresh seafood. Your seafood comes from the ocean to your table. There are all kinds of innovative people that live and work here. It's a small island, but it's a pretty busy place.
