Denver's Museum of Nature and Science is the fourth largest museum of its kind in the country. They just opened the digital planetarium which is regarded as a state of the art planetarium. They have one of the best paleontology and dinosaur collections. The world's first dinosaur was discovered in Denver not far from Red Rocks. It was the Stegosaurus, which is now the official state dinosaur. They didn't know dinosaurs existed there, they found woolly mammoths back in the east, but no one had ever found a dinosaur. When they found that here, it unleashed the great dinosaur rush and it was like the gold rush. Every university in the east had people out here looking and they eventually found much better dinosaur graveyards than here, but still found some significant ones in this area. Anywhere in the world where the Jurassic layer of rock is found, it is now called the Morrison formation. No matter where it is, in honor of the little town where they saw the first one, it is called the Morrison formation.
