Deriva Acne Medicine

By Suzanne Alicie

  • Overview

Acne is a problem that many people suffer from. When over-the-counter treatments just don't work a dermatologist may prescribe a prescription treatment. Once common prescription is an adapalene gel called Deriva. There are side effects and other things you have to take into consideration when using Deriva.
  • How to Use Deriva

Deriva should be applied each night before you go to bed. Wash your face gently and apply a thin layer of gel to affected areas. If you miss a dose, do not apply when you remember, or apply extra the next night, just continue with the regular usage. Deriva is a prescription treatment and besides dosage instructions there are other things that you will need to discuss with your dermatologist.
  • Side Effects of Deriva

Deriva will make your skin extra sensitive to the sun, this means that you should always use sunscreen and limit sun exposure. The first few weeks of use as your skin is adjusting to the treatment you will experience dryness, flaking, scaling, redness and irritation. If the reaction is extremely bothersome, consult your dermatologist because you may have an allergic reaction and need to stop the treatment. Acne breakouts are common in the first weeks of use, and are not a sign that Deriva is not working. Deriva may cause adverse reactions when used with other medications, so be sure to inform your dermatologist of any other medications you take.

  • How Deriva Works

The active ingredients in Deriva are absorbed by the skin and actively repair the skin cells that are causing clogged pores and acne. For the first month of treament many people become discouraged by the increased breakouts that occur. But what is happening is the healing and cleansing of clogged pores under the surface. Deriva is a long-term treatment plan and you should not expect to see clearer skin until after about three months of regular use. As with many things it will get worse before it gets better. After about three months the skin will be clearer and smoother, without the uneven dryness, redness, scaling and blemishes. Deriva not only treats the acne you have but repairs the skin cells to prevent future breakouts.
  • Warnings

Here are things to avoid when using Deriva. Do not apply Deriva to sunburned skin, cuts or abrasions. Do not use harsh facial cleansers which can irritate skin while using Deriva. Do not use heavy moisturizers to counter the drying effects of Deriva in the beginning. This will only cause more breakouts.
  • If You Don't Need Deriva

Most people at some point in their lives experience a mild case of acne, or even monthy hormonal breakouts, this is not the type of acne that Deriva is intended for. Before using a prescription treatment for acne you should adjust your personal skin care regime to include a deep cleanser, healthy moisturizer and possible an over-the-counter topical for occasional breakouts. Only a serious case of acne requires a dermatologist's care.
