It also should fit the homeowner's lifestyle and expectations. When I am designing a pond for example, I ask the homeowner what they want. Do they want lots of colorful relief? Do they want Goldfish or Koi? Are they looking for gently caressed waterfalls that sound like rain? Or are they looking for a crashing and dropping waterfall? I also ask them to imagine what their pond should look like. When they look at their yard what do they see? Do they picture a formal block or stone pond? Do they see something that looks like it was a natural pond, and they just happened to build the house next to it.
