Overview
They're hot. They're trendy. Some even send social messages to the world about your values and concerns. They're also easier to make than you might guess. We're talking about designing and making chunky, artful silicone bracelets that attract plenty of attention. In addition, once you master the art of the silicone bracelet, you can fashion custom gifts for friends and family. Start with some inspiration, a mold and the right raw materials, and then let your imagination take flight. Make enough to get you through clubbing, school, parties, work and anywhere else you put your fashion foot forward. -
How to make a basic bracelet
Step 1
Purchase a basic bracelet mold from a craft store, or check the link at the end of the article for online sources. These are relatively inexpensive and can be used repeatedly.
Step 2
Don a dust mask and make sure the area in which you are working is well ventilated. You'll be working with a medium that has a very unpleasant odor--it's sticky, too, so you will want to wear rubber gloves.
Step 3
Read the directions on the package of the clear casting compound you've chosen to make your bracelet(s). Make certain the product includes the hardener (catalyst) required to finish the job.
Step 4
Pour a layer of the casting resin into the mold and allow it to harden. When the compound is hard, peel off the mold.
Unique designs for your bracelets
-
Step 1
To fashion bangles with clusters of faux gems and/or adornments scattered across the top of the bracelet, place the trim into the mold first, then pour casting compound over it. Tap lightly on a table to discourage bubbles that may have formed around the adornments. Allow the bauble to harden before peeling off the mold. -
Step 2
Challenge yourself to make a bracelet with "floating elements" by sandwiching them between two layers of compound. Pour layer one into the mold and allow it to set for around a half-hour, then carefully add adornments. Slide a second layer of resin into the mold and fill to the top. Tap the mold to knock out the air bubbles. The middle layer of stones or embellishments will "float" inside the bracelet. -
Step 3
Design a bracelet resembling a rainbow of layers by tinting small batches of compound, then layer them in, one color at a time. Each time you add a color, tap the mold and give the color some time to settle in. Repeat until you have filled the bracelet mold. Remove the bracelet from the mold after it has hardened. -
Step 4
Spell out your name by lining up letter beads on top of the bracelet or embed them between two layers of casting compound. After you have had some practice, you can write out sentiments, the names of best friends, a special date or other commemorative messages. -
Step 5
Experiment with sculpting tools and unusual molds once you have gotten the hang of making silicone bracelets.
- Skill: Moderately Easy
- Ingredients:
- Bracelet mold(s)
- Silicone modeling mix
- Catalyst
- Rubber gloves and face mask
- Acetone (for clean up)
- Sculpting tools (optional)
- Faux gems and embellishments (optional)
- Tint (optional)
- Tip: Adhere to the hardening time parameters posted on the casting compound package to achieve the best results.
- Tip: For faster drying results, use a gel promoter to set the silicone in a matter of minutes.
- Tip: Compounds and catalysts have finite shelf lives, so keep raw materials in a cool place and use within the recommended time frame.
- Tip: Unless you're producing massive quantities of bracelets, buy small quantities of the compound/catalyst mix to maintain freshness.
- Warning:
- Always use protective eye wear, dust mask and gloves when mixing and pouring bracelets.
