Destination Attractions: Things To Do In Corpus Christi, Tx

Attractions and things to do in the destination of Corpus Christi, Texas.

If you live in Texas, Corpus Christi is the place college students by the thousands flock to during their Spring Break and families with kids trek to during their summer vacations. Their destination is usually one of the beaches within the city or those found in surrounding areas. Corpus Christi has been dubbed the "Sparkling City by the Sea," which is no surprise as it is located right off the Gulf of Mexico. However, Corpus Christi is more than just water and beaches. It is a city of fine arts, nautical history and fresh seafood!

Texas State Aquarium

The Texas State Aquarium located right on Corpus Christi Beach is a journey through the sands of the Gulf of Mexico all the way down to its murky depths. The visitor will be delighted by walking right under a waterfall upon entering the aquarium. Adult and child alike can observe feeding demonstrations, see diving shows and touch sea creatures like hermit crabs and sharks.

Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History

The Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History, located right by the Harbor Bridge, is one of those museums that takes the concept of "hands-on" to a whole new level. The museum centers around the theme of South Texas and its relation to both the state and the nation. For children under the age of 7, the Children's Wharf houses a recreation of a shrimp boat which kids can climb aboard and investigate. On Shoreline Boulevard, there is a statue of Selena, the slain Tejano star that hailed from Corpus Christi. In the museum, there is an exhibit which explains the process and making of this statue. You can also view replicas of the ships that Christopher Columbus used on his voyage to the New World. These replicas were built using the same materials that were used in the 15th century, down to the wood which was gathered from the same region as that of the original ships. Currently on display are the Santa Maria and the Pinta.

The Blue Ghost

If you stay in a hotel facing the bay, look outside your window and you will glimpse an eerie scene: an enormous ship hauntingly surrounded by a blue haze. This is the retired battleship, the USS Lexington, otherwise known as the Blue Ghost. If you decide to tour this ship, wear comfortable shoes and clothes, since you will be climbing steep stairs and walking through narrow doorways, just like the sailors once did.

Corpus Christi Dog Track

If you are into gambling or love watching the races, come visit the Corpus Christi Dog Track, home of greyhound racing. The races are held nightly on most week nights with some matinee performances, so check the schedule before you head over there. Each performance consists of thirteen separate races, so you will have plenty to bet on!

Dining

There are cuisines to satisfy any appetite in Corpus Christi, with the main fare consisting of seafood and Mexican food. Located downtown, Water Street Oyster Bar is famous for its fresh seafood and Cajun-inspired specialties like the Shrimp Po'Boy and the Crawfish Chicken. If you are looking for Mexican food that will make you wish you lived in Corpus Christi, visit Kiko's Mexican Food Restaurant in town. On weekends, expect a wait, but with the fresh homemade tortillas and delicious enchiladas it is well worth it.
