Different Techniques To Quit Smoking

Popular and effective ways to quit smoking.

We see advertisements about it every single day. On one magazine spread, you may see a woman with a cigarette dangling from her lips, pitching a milder lady-like cigarette. On the magazine spread on the flip side, you may see a spread about a young child left behind after her father died from lung cancer due to smoking. Over the years, smoking has been both glamorized on-screen and boycotted on the streets. With the smoking-related deaths of such stars as Desi Arnaz (musician, actor), Leonard Bernstein (famous composer and conductor), Humphrey Bogart (film star), Groucho Marx (comedian and actor) and, more recently, Johnny Carson (talk show host), in addition to the countless people across the world, there is no doubt that smoking can be deadly. If you smoke and want to quit, here are some different techniques you may want to look into.

When you speak to anybody who has quit smoking, the one thing they will say is that you have to really want to quit smoking. You cannot quit smoking half-heartedly. It may sound silly, but you really need to have a "why" when it comes to quitting. It may be because you have already begun experiencing smoking-related health issues, or maybe you want to run the Boston marathon next year and can't run for longer than a quarter-mile before you start coughing, or maybe you have a new wife or a new child who you want to see grow up. A strong and determined mind is the key to quitting.

With that being said, there are several different techniques and products on the market to help smokers quit. One product that has proven effective in helping smokers quit is the nicotine patch. It is difficult for a smoker to suddenly quit cold turkey, going from twenty cigarettes a day to none. What the nicotine patch does is help wean a smoker off the addictive nicotine. A heavy smoker will begin to experience nicotine withdrawal symptoms almost immediately, so the patch helps the smoker's body by providing small amounts of nicotine, which allows the brain and body to gradually reduce their needs for the nicotine. Most patches are available over the counter in most pharmacies. Nicotine gum is also used in much the same way, although the amount of nicotine in each piece of gum is usually much less than the amount in the patch.

A nicotine inhaler has also been quite effective for smokers and is available, usually with a doctor's prescription. Many feel that, aside from the nicotine itself, one thing that smokers miss is the hand to mouth action that smoking a cigarette allows. The inhaler, in addition to helping curb the nicotine craving, also allows the user to get that hand-to-mouth action that they desire. The user simply puffs on the inhaler when they get a craving and can control how much nicotine they need in their systems to help control the craving. However, like the nicotine available in both the patch and the gum, the nicotine in the inhaler does not have the cancer-causing toxins found in cigarettes.

Some cigarette smokers who wish to quit look towards alternative methods to curb their cravings. One such method is through hypnosis. The concept behind hypnosis sessions to quit smoking is that although a patient may consciously want to stop smoking, due to health issues or family issues, they are unable to work past their subconscious programming. In other words, the subconscious is easily able to overrule the logic and rationale of the conscious mind, since nobody is ever really aware of their subconscious thoughts. Hypnosis sessions are used to get into a person's subconscious and release the "programming" that is causing a person to smoke. Under a state of hypnosis, a patient's subconscious is thought to be more susceptible to the power of suggestion, so a licensed therapist can theoretically help transform a smoker's subconscious thoughts about smoking. It has been said that sometimes smokers will quit smoking after only one session.
