Learn how to turn old barn doors into stylish pieces of furniture for your home using the fun projects in this idea-packed guide.
Kitchen table- Give your kitchen a farm fresh feel by creating a kitchen table out of a weathered barn door. For this project all you'll need are four turned furniture legs (available at your local home improvements store) and four mounting brackets. Once your supplies are gathered, simply flip the barn door over, and secure the table legs to the backside of the door using the mounting brackets. Then, flip the table back over, and it's ready for use. Note: To increase the functionality of the table, you can cut a piece of glass or plexi to fit over top of the finished table so that the tabletop is smooth and easy to clean.
Coffee table- Give your remote controls and magazines a stylish place to rest, by creating a coffee table out of a single barn door. To create this project, you'll first need to decide how tall you want your table to be. Then, cut two pieces off of the door in your chosen length to serve as the legs for the table. Finish by attaching one of the pieces to each end of the remainder of the barn door, and your table is complete. Note: To keep your coffee table neat and orderly, you can use the recessed areas of the barn door to hold magazines and other items neatly in place.
Entertainment Center- Give your T.V. and other electronics a clever hiding place by turning an inexpensive shelving unit into a rustic entertainment center. For this project you'll need to gather a sturdy wood or melamine shelving unit, two hinges and a single barn door. Then, once your supplies are gathered, attach a hinge at the top and bottom of one of the sides of the shelf, and hang the barn door from the hinges. Note: If you'd like to create a larger entertainment center just purchase two more hinges, and mount a second barn door.
Shelving Unit- Give yourself lots of storage space by creating a shelving unit out of one large barn door. To create this project, you'll need to start by securing a barn door to the wall with wood screws. (You'll want to screw the door into the wall studs to ensure it stays firmly in place. Then, simply attach shelving brackets on the barn door at different heights, and secure lengths of shelving between the brackets. Note: To keep with the rustic barn look, you may want to use sections of weathered, barn wood for the shelves.
Bed- Give yourself a reason to hit the hay by creating a headboard out of an oversized barn door. To create this project, just attach your bed rails to the front of the door at the appropriate distance for your mattress size. Then, go a step further by turning a smaller barn door on its side, and using it as the footboard for your bed. The rails will need to be attached in the same manner as the headboard. Note: To dress up your bed a little more, two planks of barn wood can be used to hide the metal bed rails.
Hall Tree- Give your coat a respectable place to hang by creating a hall tree out of a barn door. Just add support legs to the bottom of the door to keep it held upright, and screw in several coat hooks along the top of the door. Note: You can even secure a small bench along the bottom of the door if you'd like a place to sit.
Pick up a few barn doors, and give these projects a try. You're sure to be impressed with the results.
