Assemble photos and/or item for each person to be included in your plaque. Photograph any items used in place of a photograph. Scan each photograph into a program such as Microsoft Picture It! One tip for pictures of items used in place of photographs; Try to snap your item's photo on a solid background, with some "˜white' space on the bottom or top. Once you have the photograph scanned into a photo editor on the computer, insert text right onto the picture detailing why the item represents the person whose photo is missing, such as a great grandmother who shied away from cameras, but left a legacy in a beautiful teapot.
Be Creative
Once the photographs are scanned, decide how you can bring the focus of each picture together. Effects, such as sepia tone or black and white, will lend an antique feel to the project. If the décor that the plaque will be displayed is more of a modern theme, try an effect such as film grain or watercolor. A uniform border or edge could also be utilized.
Sizes of Photographs
For the size frame recommended in the materials list, each photograph should be printed approximately 2" x 3" portrait style, depending on the actual number of photos. If you have fewer family members, freely resize the photos larger. Scrap paper cut to size will allow you to see if your individual layout will work. Remember to leave room below each picture to write down pertinent information, including full name, birth date, death date if needed, and anniversaries if desired.
Putting it all Together
The card stock that will be used for the background can be left plain or decorated. A watermark of a tree is an ideal way to add texture to the background without detracting from the projects original purpose. To add a watermark in Microsoft Word, choose Background from the Format menu, then Printed Watermark, and follow directions for using a picture. Other word processors or photo programs will allow you to make similar print options.
Once you are satisfied with where each picture will be placed, permanently affix each photograph to the card stock with an acid free photo safe adhesive. Photo corners also work well, and lend a bit of nostalgia if an antique style is chosen. With pen, mark details beneath each picture. Place into frame, hang, and enjoy for generations to come!
