If your Xbox isn't working, there are many easy fixes and part replacements.
Safety
Although it is possible to correct minor Xbox problems at home, it is important to understand the delicacy and dangers of the device. The safety warnings listed in the manual and throughout the inside of the machine are not to deter you from making repairs; they are intended to protect consumers from harm. Any time that the unit is opened, its power supply is exposed. When the system is plugged in, touching any internal part can result in electric shock. The results of shock can range from minor pain to serious heart damage and even fatality. For this reason, you must always disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet before undertaking repairs. Beyond this, the Electro Static stability of the unit must be considered. When operating on an opened Xbox, take measures to avoid introducing static electricity into the unit. Wear latex gloves, take off wool or any other static-producing clothing, and wear an approved static wrist strap if possible. This will prevent disturbances in the game's naturally occurring static environment, which is necessary for proper functioning.
Common Repairs
Now that you have an understanding of these basic safety precautions, you can begin to asses the problem. Since many repairs take place inside the Xbox, first follow these steps for opening the unit. Turn the system over and use a Torx magnetized screwdriver to remove the six screws located under the rubber feet. Flip the unit back over and gently shake it to remove the cover. This will give you access to the Xbox interior. From here, you can reach the source of many problems. Since the unit pulls in air to keep the engine cool, environmental dust regularly builds up inside. If the lens, mirror, or a variety of other parts becomes coated with the dust, the system will not be able to read video game discs. If you see a dirty disc error on your game screen, follow these steps.
First, use a CD/DVD cleaner disc to remove build-up dust from the lens. More often than not, this is all that is required to get your system running properly again. If the error message still appears after you have tried this, you will need to open up the unit and clean it. After opening removing the cover as explained above, you will see the CD drive cover which looks like a square piece of metal with a warning sticker on top. Remove the four screws from this piece and push the metal tabs on each side to release it. Upon pulling it back, you will reveal two lenses and a mirror, all of which are small and circular. Begin by cleaning these three pieces with a glass cleaner-soaked Q-tip. Follow up by using canned air to blast visible dirt out of the entire area. Reassemble the unit, following the above steps in reverse order. Hopefully, these measures will bring the system back to working order. Compressed air can also be used to cleanse the underlying motherboard of debris if your game tends to lock up during game play.
Another problem gamers are likely to experience with their Xbox is sticking controller buttons. Although many people suffer with impaired game play because of this issue, it is very simple to correct. Begin by using a Phillips head #1 screwdriver to remove the seven screws on the back of the disconnected controller. Turn the piece over and remove the top cover to reveal the buttons beneath. Remove these, the rubber cups on which they rest, and the directional pad. Wash each piece with warm soapy water, allow time for complete drying, and replace them. Fit each button into the front piece of the controller, where they will fit only in the proper position. Now you can simply lower the back of the controller onto the front and replace the screws.
Another easily repaired issue is a frayed controller cord, which is especially common among owners of chewing pets like dogs and ferrets. Rather than spending twenty dollars every time your puppy feels the need to chew, you can try to fix the problem yourself. Cut away broken areas of each piece of the cord and peel back a couple of inches of the plastic to reveal the foil-wrapped wires. This foil should be removed to give you access to the wires. Either solder each pair of wires back together or twist them together, wrapping all of the pairs completely with electrical tape once they are rejoined. When all the wires are reconnected, cover the entire area thickly with electrical tape, overlapping with the remaining black coating. With these steps, your controller should be functional again.
While these basic repairs can be made safely at home, more complicated issues should be sent to the manufacturer for correction. Serious malfunctions of the motherboard or error messages not involving a dirty machine should not be worked on at home. To do so could ruin the Xbox's circuitry or computer chips, leaving you with an irreparably damaged system. Keep in mind also that breaking the seal to open up your Xbox will void the warranty, so only undertake repairs you are sure you can complete. With the right tools and patience, you can mend several Xbox problems yourself, avoiding the cost and trouble of professional repairs or a new gaming system.
